The Seattle King County NAACP will host a student workshop for their 2019 ACT-SO competition this Sat., Apr. 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church – 124 21st Ave. in Seattle.
ACT-SO is a year-long enrichment program that culminates in a local and national competition where students compete for scholarships and prizes totaling over $250,000. ACT-SO seeks to promote positive self-esteem, academic and artistic excellence, and positive interaction between our youth and the adult professional community.
The Seattle King County NAACP ACT-SO Program, the “Olympics of the Mind”, was developed to enhance and showcase the academic and artistic achievement of high school students of African descent just as we do their athletic achievements. Since 1978, ACT-SO has:
Challenged students to excel and consistently put a spotlight on their efforts and successes;
Raised the standard of excellence and expectation among our youth;
Promoted a climate of academic and artistic development
Mobilized the adult community to serve as mentors and coaches for students in the areas of STEM, humanities, performing arts, visual arts and business
Students can select up to 3 competitions from a total of 32 categories. Students who win the gold locally will receive an all-expense paid trip to compete nationally in Detroit this summer. This is a great opportunity for students to win money for college and get recognized for their achievements nationally.
The local competition will take place on Sat., Apr. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the MLK Community Event Center – 3201 E. Republican in Seattle.
African-Americans students can succeed and compete at the same or superior levels as their counterparts in classrooms, boardrooms and laboratories across this nation and abroad. The objective of ACT-SO is to prepare, recognize and reward African-American youth who exemplify scholastic and artistic excellence.
The Seattle King County NAACP, under the leadership of Sadiqa Sakin, is encouraging all youth in Seattle to participate in the upcoming workshop and competition to showcase the rich talent the Seattle has to offer.
“Our youth are brilliant and need a platform to broadcast their academic and artistic achievements,” says Darci Henderson, Co-chair of the Seattle King County NAACP ACT-SO program. “The ACT-SO program will help cultivate their confidence to prepare them for their future.”
